So Steve Harvey won’t be getting a Christmas card from Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez for probably ever, after his massive blunder on Saturday 20 December 2015.
The 58-year-old comedian and TV host announced the wrong winner at the finals of Miss Universe 2015, which led to Gutierrez being awkwardly forced to remove her Miss Universe crown and give it to Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach.
Oh the internet was set alight, as expected, and is still buzzing about the incident. Mainly because it was one of the more mortifying moments in TV history, but there are some legitimate questions in the aftermath.
Was it a publicity stunt? This was the common assumption after that too-perfect viral moment. Viewers weren’t the only ones to instantly think it was all a conspiracy. “When we found out that there was a mistake, I was like, ‘They did this on purpose for publicity!’ ” Miss Universe judge Perez Hilton said on “Good Morning America”.
The other question surrounds the effects this will have on Harvey’s career, other than being the laughing stock of the erm…universe. Harvey will be back to host the pageant next year.
Perhaps a more considerate question is how Miss Colombia is actually doing after the embarrassing feat? Such circumstances can be traumatising, to say the least. Let’s hope she is ok, ey.
