O k, I know, it’s a cheesy title, but the sentiment behind the title is sincere, genuine and accurate. Teamwork is vital if you want to be successful. I am always sceptical when I hear people say they are ‘self-made’ with regards to their success. For every successful person, there are many more people who have assisted and supported them, directly or indirectly.
Would Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo be exceptional footballers, without the support from great teams? Maybe not.
However, I’m not just talking about teamwork on the football pitch. I’m talking about teamwork at home in school or at work. Teamwork can help us achieve much more than what we could have achieved, if we tackled a task on our own.
Teamwork is about taking responsibility of yourself and others, having a sense of unity and a common purpose. It is what the French would call ‘esprit de corps’.
If teams are the engine, then teamwork is the oil that helps the team to work effectively.
Teamwork is vital because:
- Tasks can be accomplished and completed quicker if we all work together.
- It helps us to learn from others, especially our colleagues.
- It can help to improve our interpersonal skills.
- In particular, employers are looking for people with the following teamwork skills:
- Active listening
- Flexible and adaptable
The question is, are you a team player?
