The Budget bite-sized

Believed to have started in the 16th century, the eccentric British tradition of the chancellor of the ex-chequer holding out a red briefcase outside 11 Downing Street on ‘Budget Speech’ day has surely stood the test of time. The distinctive case, originally made for Chancellor William Gladstone in the 1860s, makes an appearance to the flashing pack of paparazzi outside Number 11 every Budget Day about this time of year. It’s a day when the chancellor publicly delivers his budget speech to the House of Commons; a day when he announces the expenditures of the public sector, in compliance with government policy.
