The Help – by kathryn-stockett
The book ‘The Help’ is set in Mississippi in a small town called Jackson in the early 60s.
It’s a story based on how a Black maids would raise white children. White socialite mothers do what they do best – nothing!
These women are trusted to look after their children which should be their prized possessions. But the help isn’t trusted not to steal the silver.
This book reminds us of the discrimination ‘colored folk’ (black people) experienced on a day to day basis. i.e. not being able to use the same toilet as their white employer.
Sad in parts but done tastefully so not to offend the reprehensible way white people treated black people.
A good, informative read.
