Thomas Mullen’s book – Darktown is a gripping, yet shocking and unsettling crime story.

The novel is set in pre-civil rights 1948 Atlanta. Mullen takes readers on an investigative journey of Atlanta’s first black police department.

With all good crime stories, there’s a problem. The authority of this department is limited due to fact they are black.

They can’t arrest white suspects, drive a squad car or use police headquarters. They work from the basement of a gym.

A black woman turns up fatally beaten – last seen in a car driven by a white man. The force risks everything to investigate the murder.

The ‘magnificent’ novel is soon to be a major TV series.
