Bindi Irwin and her dance partner Derek Hough, brought tears to the judges’ eyes during the final of US reality TV show Dancing With The Stars, as she paid tribute to her late father.
The freestyle dance was performed to the poignant song Footprints in the Sand, and ended with Bindi looking up at a photograph of her kissing her dad as a child.
Steve was killed in Queensland at the age of 44, when he was attacked by a stingray and pierced in the heart. Nine years later, Bindi and Derek have danced their way to victory in his name and underneath a photo projection of him.
They were declared the winners and awarded the Mirrorball trophy on Tuesday 24 November. Before the final even began, Bindi posted a tweet dedicating her journey to her “beautiful family”.
17-year-old Bindi and Derek were competing with Alek Skarlatos and Lindsay Arnold, and Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess.
As she was crowned champion, she shouted: “I can’t believe I’m here. Thank you for changing my life”.
