Women are quite rightly feeling scorned as it emerged that female sanitation products carry tax as they are classed as a ‘luxury’ item.
‘Tolled for having a uterus’ is a phrase currently doing the rounds as a way of describing what is basically happening as a result of the five per cent tax rate put on the item.
The Independent revealed how even though tampons and sanitary towels made the luxuries list, exotic meat, edible sugar flowers and alcoholic jellies didn’t, according to a petition that has gained over 182,000 signatures so far.
The article also told the stories of several case studies, one of which involved a 22 year-old girl who chose to continuously take her combined pill- without the recommended week break- rather than have to pay extortionate prices to have her period.
