Tupac’s ‘Dear Mama’ replayed as mum dies at 69

US reports have confirmed that the mother of late rapper Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, died late Monday night, possibly from a heart attack.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Department released a statement on Tuesday 3 May saying emergency services were at her Sausalito home in California around 9.43pm responding to a report of “a possible cardiac arrest”. She was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at 10.28pm.

69-year-old Afeni was a philanthropist, founding and running the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation after her son’s death. She was also a Black Panther as a young adult and defended herself in court when she was accused of multiple bombings in 1970.

As keeper of all things Tupac, Afeni gave the green light to the biopic, “All Eyez on Me” which just recently finished filming.

The Marin County Sheriff says the coroner will investigate the reasons for Afeni’s death.

“Sheriff’s Coroners [sic] Office will lead investigation to determine exact cause & manner of Afeni Shakur’s death”, the office said in a tweet.

Information is still being gathered, and the sheriff’s department will answer questions regarding her death later on Tuesday 3 May.

Tupac’s famous track dedicated to his mother – ‘Dear Mama’ – is amongst the many tribute posts that are being retweeted following the tragic news.

Pepa from American Hip Hop group SaltNPepa tweeted, “Sad news about Pacs mom #AfeniShakur RIP Dear Mama learned a lot about being a women from watching you.”
