The mother of a teenager who was raped by three men says she was intimidated by up to 50 members of the defendants’ families and friends during their trial, which ran at Manchester Crown Court.
Jane Smith watched on Friday 29 January 2016 as three Somali men, all 20, were jailed for a total of 29 years for raping her 16-year-old daughter in 2013.
On Friday, Osman was jailed for 10 years, Yussuf to 10 years and Ahmed to 9 years at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square.
Ms Smith felt intimidated during the two-month trial and claims she was smuggled into the back of Manchester Crown Court to see the sentencing as the men’s supporters protested with banners outside.
Speaking afterwards, Ms Smith said, “I was frightened throughout and my husband was frightened. There were so many of them and many would goad me when I walked past and try to intimidate us”.
The court heard the victim – who was 16 at the time of the gang rape – was lured to a hotel in 2013 under the pretence of a game of ‘hide and seek’.
