Zadie Smith’s debut novel explores the lives of two different families, connected by the friendship of Archie and Samas, the men of the houses.
With one family’s routes in Jamaica and the other in Bangladesh, the story gives an insight into early multiculturalism and the racial inequalities that came with it.
The novel succeeds in the difficult task of creating humour, whilst tackling important social and cultural issues. It is energetic and light-hearted at times, yet has deeper, serious themes which make for a layered plot.
