Persistent suspect assaulted woman on Market Street
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is appealing for information after a woman was sexually assaulted in Atherton.
At around 5.10pm on 7 December 2016, a 29-year-old woman was walking dogs on Bolton Road.
The 29-year-old was followed by a man who she had seen leaning against a wall moments earlier. The man walked alongside her and asked if she would like to go out with him.
The young woman was concerned by his behaviour. She discreetly called her mother and asked her to come and meet her.
Subsequently, as they passed a chemist on Market Street, the man asked her to go down an alley – she refused.
The man continued to walk alongside the woman before he went into the bookie on Market Street.
The woman then tried to walk away but he caught up with her again. He asked her to walk down Crab Tree Lane with him.
When the victim refused, the man sexually assaulted her. The woman’s mother then arrived and the attacker escaped along Alma Street.
GMP says: “The woman was left shaken by his actions and remains extremely upset”.
GMP is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch. The news of the horrific attack has shocked the local community.
